JESUS CHANGES WATER TO WINE - When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother (Mary) told him so, and Jesus replied "Dear woman, why do you involve me? My time has not yet come." (v.3-4)
- Nevertheless, his mother still told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to. Jesus told the servants to fill the stone jars used for ceremonial washing to the brim, and then to draw some out for the master of the banquet. (v.5-8)
- The master praised it as the best wine, without knowing its origins. (v.9-10)
- This was the first of His miraculous signs, thus, He revealed His glory and His disciples put their faith in Him. (v.11-12)
JESUS CLEARS THE TEMPLE - When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus and his disciples went up to Jerusalem. (v.13)
- In the temple courts, Jesus found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and also people exchanging money. He drove all from the temple grounds, and scattered the coins + overturned the tables. He said "How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" (v.14-16)
- The disciples remembered that it was written: Zeal for your house will consume me. (v.17)
- When the Jews asked for a sign to prove his authority, Jesus said "Destroy this temple, and I will rebuild it in 3 days." The Jews thought that he was talking about the building, but the real temple is Himself. After he was resurrected later his disciples recalled and believed his words. (v.18-22)
- While he was at the feast, many who saw the signs believed that he was the One, but he did not entrust himself to them. (v.23-24)
- He does not need man's testimony about man, because he knows what we are thinking. (v.25)
Thoughts - The miraculous signs seemed so easy to him, and he could perform them even though it wasn't his time yet.
- Jesus was very indignant and super angry when he found the temple as a market -- I think we all should develop that kind of protection of the sanctity of places of God.
- Jesus was actually giving a prophecy of what was to come, but the people did not realise it -- we cannot fathom the ways of God.
- Jesus sees us from the inside out, and knows everything about us: we cannot hide anything from him. But, he still talks to us and does not act superior and ignore us because he wants to be FRIENDS, to BUILD A RELATIONSHIP with us.
Questions - Why did he still work the miracle if it wasn't his time yet? - Why did Jesus drop hints to the people at the temple about his resurrection, when they didn't know anything about it?
here's my reflections on John 2 (: and i hope this adds on to what you have gotten so far about John 1 and 2!
hi celliessss. in line with what tabi posted, some verses that struck me.
verse 13:"Children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." born of God. aint that cooool. :D
and, verse 51"He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man." haha i was just wondering what it would be like to see heaven open. (:
John 1 Things I have gathered about John the Baptist: - sent from God (v.6) - came as a witness to testify concerning the light (of men), so that through Him all might believe (v.7) - was NOT the light, only the witness to the light (v.8) - when the priests and Levites asked him who he was, he confessed freely that he was "not the Christ/Elijah/Prophet" and when finally they asked who he was, John replied "I am the voice of the one calling in the desert. 'Make straight the way for the Lord'." (v.19-23) - when asked why he still baptised with water when he was none of the above, John replied "I baptise with water. But among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie". That person is Jesus. (v.24-27) - John recognised Jesus: The Lamb of God who takes away the sing of the world (v.29) - reason why John came to baptise with water was so that Jesus could be revealed to the world (v.31) - John's testimony: "I saw the spirit come down from heaven like a dove and remain on Him. I would not have known him, except that the one who sent me to baptise with water told me: The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is he who will baptise with the Holy Spirit." therefore he saw and testified that he [Jesus] was the Son of God. (v.32-34)
Things about Jesus: - world did not recognize Him, did not receive Him. (v.10-11) - to those who received and believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God (v.12) - become children that are born not of natural descent, but OF GOD. (v. 13) - law was given through Moses, but grace and truth through Jesus Christ. (v.17) - Jesus invited John's two disciples to spend the day with him so that they could get to know Him better. (v.35-39) - Jesus named Andrew's brother Cephas (Peter) (v.40-42) - Nathanael did not believe that Jesus was THE one so he went to see Jesus, and he believed in Him just because Jesus saw him under a tree before Philip spoke to him. (v.46-49) - Last quote: "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that. I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and angels of God descending and ascending on the Son of Man." (v.50-51)
Questions: - what does seeing Nathanael under a fig tree make Nathanael believe?
haha ok so this is what i got from reading John 1 yesterday, so i decided to post it here (:
